Community Outreach
Presentations and workshops are presented at schools and appropriate public facilities throughout the year.
School activities can be coordinated with teacher’s curriculum and scheduled activities.
Fairbanks Counseling and Adoption provides pregnancy and parenting knowledge, increased skills, and
community and peer support designed to modify high-risk behaviors and enhance each parent’s ability to protect their child
from abuse, neglect and unsafe environments. Presentations are based on fun, interactive game models to
attract the youths’ attention and promote interactive involvement. Teen panelists present personal stories
and share their challenges as teen parents to help prevent their fellow students from repeating their
mistakes. Community professionals such as lawyers, child support enforcement or child custody case workers
are often included to provide legal and technical information.
Goals and Purposes:
- Encourage delayed sexual activity and teen pregnancy prevention for adolescents through discussions of decision making, positive and negative peer pressures, healthy relationships, sexuality and communication.
- Broaden teens’ understanding of the important roles parents play, both mothers and fathers, in the development and shaping of their child’s life.
- Provide teen parents with a working awareness of community resources and support systems.
- Strengthen parent/teen communication skills.
